Introduction
The 12th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits on 10–14 December 2006 will be hosted by the Philippines. The ASEAN Summit is an annual meeting held on a rotational basis by the country chairing the ASEAN Standing Committee. The Related Summits that are to be held around that time are the 10th ASEAN + 3 Summit, 10th ASEAN + China Summit, 10th ASEAN + Japan Summit, 10th ASEAN + Republic of Korea Summit and 5th ASEAN + India Summit. The Philippines will also host the Second East Asia Summit (EAS) on 13 December 2006.
The Summit is held annually with the major objective of solidifying the ASEAN as a regional institution that remains united in its stand on matters with worldwide concern, despite cultural diversities and political differences. The meetings among leaders define the relations within the region as well as the development of one clear identity of the ASEAN as a global organization that affects the world community. The annual meeting is an opportunity for the leaders to craft policies that shall benefit not only the member countries but the neighboring countries as well.
The Leaders of ASEAN member countries evaluate cooperation within the group and expand relations with the optimal results in consideration.
The Summits of the member countries of the ASEAN and the dialogue partners, People's Republic of China, Japan, Republic of Korea and India, pave the way for stronger ties with these nations with the objective of going beyond boundaries and forging agreements that will provide advantageous gains for all involved.
The East Asia Summit aims to sustain the substantial relations with the People's Republic of China, Japan, Republic of Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand, following the inaugural Summit last year in Kuala Lumpur. |
